Lakme Fashion Week 2017 Winter/Festive: Round Up

Missed the Lakme Fashion Week? Don’t worry, we’re here with a full round-up of the highlights of the Lakme Fashion Week 2017 Winter Festive, held at the St. Regis in Mumbai last week, so you can catch up on all that is hot and happening on the runway this year!

Day 1

The LFW Winter/Festive 2017 kicked off in the tradition of LFWs every year, with the first day being the Gen Next show, where upcoming designers from the country got to showcase their talent with the biggies of the fashion world. This year, we had a great selection of new talent showcasing their well designed collections that left us really impressed. From Sumiran Kabir Sharma’s Anaam that was inspired by the red-light district of Sonagaatchi in Kolkata to Saaksha and Kinni’s play with textiles, the Gen Next show was filled with inspiration and we could really see the effort and the thought that went behind each design.

The big names that day also had us impressed. Label Ritu Kumar chose to present their Spring Summer 2018 collection to keep up with international timelines, and we for saw a great collection of lace and ruffles, with a lot of florals which is perfect for spring. Disha Patani, the showstopper for the label looked stunning in the collection!

Even Masaba Gupta’s bridal collection, ‘Madagascar’ left us floored with the creativity, the expert use of colour and the sheer modernness of the ensembles, that perfectly encapsulated the modern Indian bride with a contemporary taste in fashion.

Day 2

Day 2 was Sustainable Fashion day and we saw the best of eco-friendly and slow-fashion designs on the runway. The running theme was organic textiles and a lot of designers dipped into ethnic fabrics and textiles for their designs. We loved the bohemian flair that most designs emulated. Collections that stood out were Craftmark by AIACA, where the designs featured traditional Indian crafts and embroideries.

We loved Sunita Shanker’s extremely wearable collection, which was made for the fashion conscious working woman and comprised of Indian textiles and crafts in a simple colour palette of red, black and white.

The #RestartFashion collection by Anuj Bhutani, Doodlage and Chola was also very impressive, with their very experimental silhouettes that were minimalistic in colour palette and cut, but are ideally suited for the modern, fashionable sensitive man and woman.

Day 3:

Day 3 of the glittering event saw the best of Bollywood grace the stage as showstoppers for various designers. Celebrating the best of fusions wear and western special occasion wear, the designers on day 3 of the Lakme Fashion Week 2017 showcased impressive ensembles that had us floored. One of the best looks of the day was worn by Chitrangada Singh for designer Neha Agarwal, whose collection was a perfect fusion of western silhouettes and fabrics bearing Indian folk art like Madhubani etc.

We also really liked the concept and presentation of Eka’s Rina Singh, whose collection looked at incomplete works of art, and was inspired by the life and the art of the late Indian painter Amrita Shergil. The collection featured clothes that would have befitted the artist at several points in her life and the effort was so thorough that the clothes even had a worn in look.

Another impressive collection was by Falguni and Shane Peacock, which featured embellishments by jewellery designer Farah Khan. Preity Zinta was the showstopper for the designer duo and we absolutely loved the colours and the cuts of the ensembles!

Day 4

The ramp sizzled on day 4 with some breathtaking creations! We loved the elegance of all the collections, but the designers that really stood out were SVA by Sonam and Paras Modi. The Indian ensembles from day 4 took the limelight for their magnificence and grandeur.

Nachiket Barve, a Gen Next designer also really impressed up with his foray into bridal wear, inspired by Greek legends and Goddesses.

The show that really took our breath away was Manish Arora’s. He celebrated his 10 years at Parisian catwalks with his collection ‘Cosmic Love’, presented at the ground floor of Mumbai’s Palladium Mall. The models were dressed up in illuminated clothes that were inspired by the universe and stunned us all as they descended down the escalators of the mall.

Day 5

The last day of the LFW Winter Festive 2017 saw the best of neo-Indian silhouettes and western influenced fusions, with soft colours and moderns designs. A collection that stood out for its uniqueness was Shriya Som’s youthful and contemporary interpretation of Indian ensembles. Combining well-known fabrics like silk in contemporary colours like pastel with cuts like ruffles and pre-draped sarees, her collection was feminine and quintessentially elegant. Her showstopper Diana Penty looked stunning in her ivory gown!

We also really liked Divya Reddy’s ‘Sage’ which introduced a rich moss green colour to the runway, which went incredibly well with her ensembles!

And as always, Manish Malhotra did not fail to impress with his collection, 'Tales of Indulgence' which was a collection of cocktail/evening festive wear for both men and women that glittered with embellishments! The choice of fabrics and cuts really added to the opulence of the bespoke collection.

With such great talent introducing the trends for the season, we’re excited and ready for the fashion year. We loved how this edition of Lakme Fashion Week had so many wearable options and paid significant attention to sustainable fashion. We really can’t wait to see what the next edition of the fashion week next year will bring!
